What is a Chief AI Officer?
A Chief AI Officer is an executive accountable for the company-wide AI thesis: strategy, risk, regulation, vendor selection, and the narrative the board hears about AI. The role usually reports to the CEO and exists at companies where AI is a regulated, multi-business-unit concern.
The role became fashionable as boards started asking who owns AI risk and AI opportunity at the executive table. At a regulated enterprise — banks, pharma, insurance, public sector — that question has a real answer with budget, headcount, and audit accountability attached. The CAIO earns the seat by handling exactly that.
Below enterprise scale, the role is almost always theatre. A small company does not need an executive owning company-wide AI strategy; it needs someone who will pick the next bet and ship it. That is a fractional AI CTO job, not a Chief AI Officer job. Hiring a CAIO at fifty people generally produces slides, not shipped systems.
Where the CAIO matters most: regulatory surfaces like the EU AI Act, multi-business-unit AI portfolios that need a shared risk framework, and board-level narrative. Where it matters least: pre-Series-B teams trying to ship their first AI feature.

Owns the company AI risk register, the cross-BU AI portfolio, the regulatory posture (EU AI Act, sector rules), and the executive narrative. Less hands-on; more authority and accountability.
