Head of AI plain-English.

Operator-grade definition. Plain words, plus where the term shows up in real work.

What is a Head of AI?

A Head of AI is the functional lead accountable for the AI team, model quality, the evaluation harness, and the AI roadmap. The role usually sits inside engineering or data, reports to the CTO or VP, and owns the AI team's outputs the way a Head of Backend owns the backend.

The role is team leadership. Hire the engineers, set the model-quality bar, build the eval harness, manage vendor selection at the team level, and ship the AI roadmap quarter by quarter. The Head of AI is the person who is on the hook when a model regresses, an eval slips, or a vendor invoice spikes.

It is not, by itself, an executive role. A Head of AI rarely owns the company-wide AI thesis or board narrative — that is a CAIO surface. A Head of AI also rarely picks the very first AI bet at a pre-AI company — that is closer to a Fractional AI CTO surface. Inside a growing AI surface, the role is critical.

The most common failure mode is a Head of AI boxed into running one model team and never given authority over the surrounding system — retrieval, observability, agent infrastructure. Without that authority, the role becomes a model-quality role only, and the company underinvests in everything around the model.

Head of AI vs Director of Machine Learning: are they the same?

Often yes at scale-ups; the title varies more by company convention than by scope. Both own the AI team and model quality. Director-of-ML is the more traditional label; Head-of-AI is the newer marketing-grade one.

Can a Head of AI replace a fractional AI CTO?

Different jobs. Head of AI runs a team and owns model quality. Fractional AI CTO sits above that — picking bets, vendor calls, killing pilots. Mature orgs have both.

When should we hire a Head of AI?

Once the AI team is more than a couple of engineers and there is a roadmap that needs an owner. Below that, you have an IC problem dressed up as a leadership problem.
