Interim CTO plain-English.
Operator-grade definition. Plain words, plus where the term shows up in real work.
What is a Interim CTO?
An interim CTO is a senior technology leader who steps into a full-time CTO role for a fixed runway — usually three to nine months — covering a defined gap: a CTO departure, a migration with a hard deadline, or a fundraising window that demands technical leadership at the executive table.
The role is full-time hours with a defined end date. The engagement window is the entire product: stabilize the team, ship whatever was at risk when the runway started, write the job spec for the next permanent CTO, and hand over cleanly. Interim CTOs are not building a five-year thesis; they are buying the company time to make a clean permanent hire.
The shape of the work is different from a fractional engagement. A fractional CTO is part-time cadence, often indefinite. An interim CTO is full-time cadence, finite. They overlap in seniority and judgment, but the buying trigger is different: fractional is bought because you do not need full-time yet, interim is bought because you have a gap and the clock is running.
The biggest failure mode is treating interim as a hiring trick — keeping someone in seat indefinitely while quietly skipping the permanent search. Interim earns its fee on the handover; without one, the company has just paid more for a temporary version of the role it was avoiding hiring for.
Related questions
Interim CTO vs fractional CTO: which one fits my gap?
If the gap is full-time hours with a defined end (departure, migration, fundraise), interim. If it is ongoing senior judgment a few days a week, fractional. Different shapes, different price tags.
How long do interim CTO engagements last?
Typically three to nine months. Shorter than that and there is not enough runway to make real decisions; longer and the company has been avoiding a permanent hire.
Should an interim CTO take equity?
Sometimes a sliver, often a cash-only retainer. The honest version is matched to the engagement window — equity that vests at a milestone tied to the handover.
