What is a Fractional CTO?
A fractional CTO is a senior technology leader who works with a company on a part-time, ongoing basis — usually one to three days a week — to set technical direction, design the architecture, and steer the engineering team without taking a full-time seat.
The role exists because senior technical judgment is rarely needed forty hours a week before a company has scaled its engineering org. A founder making early stack, hiring, and vendor calls usually needs an experienced backstop — not a full-time executive carrying salary, equity, and headcount expectations the company has not earned yet.
A fractional CTO sits between an advisor (calls only) and a full-time CTO (everything, all the time). The operator-shape engagement also writes specs, opens pull requests, runs CI, and ships first cuts. The advisor-shape engagement stays in calls and reviews. The honest version of the role tells you which one you are buying before the contract is signed.
Most early-stage teams overbuy a full-time CTO and underbuy a fractional one. The reversibility shape is what matters: a fractional engagement can be ended inside a billing cycle, while a bad full-time hire costs 12+ months to unwind. Use fractional to make the big calls until the company has earned the full-time seat.

Can a fractional CTO actually code?
Depends who you hire. The advisor shape will not. The operator shape will — same person scopes the bet, writes the specs, opens the PRs. We run the operator shape; some teams need the advisor instead.
