Field CTO plain-English.

Operator-grade definition. Plain words, plus where the term shows up in real work.

What is a Field CTO?

A field CTO is a senior technical role inside a vendor whose job is to meet customers as a peer of their CTO — running strategic selling motions, architecting integrations, leading design partnerships, and feeding what they hear back into product. The role is internal to a vendor, not external to a customer.

The role exists because complex platform sales need a senior technical voice on the vendor side. A field CTO joins late-stage sales calls, runs architecture sessions, writes joint roadmaps with the customer's CTO, and is often the most senior engineer the customer ever talks to. They are paid by the vendor and accountable to product and revenue.

Confusion happens because the title says CTO. A field CTO is not the CTO of your company — they are the vendor's senior technical face. Useful, often excellent engineers, but they are not a substitute for a fractional or full-time CTO on your side of the table. They earn their fee by helping you choose and adopt the vendor's product, not by being independent.

Where it gets interesting: the best field CTOs build a body of work across hundreds of customer architectures, which is why their roadmap input often beats internal product managers'. As a buyer, treat them as senior peers — and remember which company writes their pay-cheque.

Related questions

Is a field CTO a real CTO?

Real engineering seniority, yes. Real CTO accountability for your company, no — they work for the vendor. Different role, useful when you are buying or adopting a platform.

Can a field CTO act as our CTO?

No. Conflict of interest is structural — they are paid by a vendor. Hire a fractional or full-time CTO independent of any vendor for that.

Field CTO vs solutions architect: what is the difference?

Field CTO is more senior, more strategic, fewer customers. Solutions architect is hands-on, more customers, more day-to-day implementation work.
